Connect your AI assistant
Your own AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Codex and others that support MCP) can answer questions from your MechIQ data — for example "what did we take last week compared with the week before?", "which account customers owe more than €500, and for how long?" or "what's waiting on parts?".
The assistant runs on your AI subscription. MechIQ only answers its questions.
What it can and can't do
- Read only. It can't change anything, send a text or email, book a job or take a payment.
- Only stored data. It never starts a paid look-up (registration, HaynesPro, bulletins) or a MechIQ AI feature.
- Your role, your data. It sees what the person who connected it sees. Garage admins see reports and financials; front-desk staff see what the front desk sees. Technicians can't connect.
- You choose what to share. When you connect, you tick the kinds of data to share (jobs, customers, money, reports and so on). Anything you don't tick, it can't see.
Turn it on
- Go to Settings → AI assistants (garage admins).
- Tick Allow AI assistants to connect and choose Save changes.
It is off until you turn it on. Switching it off again disconnects every assistant straight away.
Add MechIQ to your assistant
Settings → AI assistants shows your MechIQ address — your garage's own web address followed by /mcp, for example https://yourgarage.mechiq.ie/mcp — with a Copy button and the steps for each assistant:
- Claude (web or desktop): Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector → paste the address → Connect.
- ChatGPT: Settings → Apps & Connectors → create a connector with the address and OAuth sign-in (your plan may need Developer mode).
- Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http mechiq <your address>, then/mcp→ Authenticate. - Gemini CLI: add the address under
mcpServersin~/.gemini/settings.json(ashttpUrl), then/mcp auth mechiq. - Codex: add
[mcp_servers.mechiq]withurl = "<your address>"to~/.codex/config.toml, thencodex mcp login mechiq.
Menu names change between versions of each assistant. Look for "custom connector", "MCP server" or "remote server".
Sign in and choose what to share
When you add the address, your assistant opens MechIQ's normal sign-in page for your garage. Sign in with your usual username and password. MechIQ then shows:
- which assistant is asking and where it will return you;
- the role it will act as (Garage admin or Front of house — your highest role in the garage);
- the kinds of data to share — untick any you don't want to share.
Choose Allow. You go back to your assistant, connected.
See and disconnect connections
Settings → AI assistants lists every connected assistant: who connected it, as which role, what it shares, when it was last used and how many questions it asked. Choose Disconnect to end one at once.
Questions asked lists every question: when, who, which kind of question and how many results. Names, phone numbers, registrations and searches are recorded as [redacted].
A connection stays signed in for up to 30 days of use; after that, connect again.
Your customers' data
The data you share — customer names and contact details included — goes to the AI service you connect. Your garage chooses to share it and is responsible for how that service uses it, as for any other tool you give your customer data to. Share only what you need, and check your AI provider's data settings.
